Recent Indian Wars, Under the Lead of Sitting Bull

Book Description

This book was written during the uprising of the Sioux Indians and their kindred tribes, in the Dakotas in 1891. The Indians had declared that they preferred extinction to slavery or cultural assimilation, and thus it was deemed a wise government policy to rid the lands east of the Mississippi of their presence. The government granted migrating tribes large reservations and self-government, provided they remain on these reservations and do what was asked of them.

Numerous tribes were forced into singular areas and because there was insufficient land or food, inevitably became hostile and fought against one another. The tribes continued to regard the white man with hostility, seeing his advance as dispossession and his way of life as obnoxious. There were constant clashes as the California gold rush and the development of agriculture and mining brought the white man into more contact with the Indians. This book tells the story of these bloody wars led by Sitting Bull. It includes a full account of the Messiah Craze and the Ghost Dances.
