Emma is a comedic novel by Jane Austen published in 1815, generally regarded as the most perfectly constructed of all her works, concerning the perils of misconstrued romance.
Although convinced that she herself will never marry, Emma Woodhouse, a precocious twenty-year-old resident of the village of Highbury, imagines herself to be naturally gifted in conjuring love matches. After self-declared success at matchmaking between her governess and Mr. Weston, a village widower, Emma takes it upon herself to find an eligible match for her new friend, Harriet Smith. Though Harriet’s parentage is unknown, Emma is convinced that Harriet deserves to be a gentleman’s wife and sets her friend’s sights on Mr. Elton, the village vicar.
Emma is structured around a number of marriages recently consummated or anticipated, and, in each case, the match solidifies the participant’s social status.
