Written in 1890, War-Path and Bivouac is a narrative of stirring personal experiences in the Big Horn and Yellowstone Expeditions of 1876. Although the author, John Finerty, was in the field as War Correspondent for the Chicago “Times”, during battle, on the march and in bivouac he was an active member of the 3rd Calvary. His purpose for writing these memoirs was to enlighten the reader as to the adventures, hardships, heroes, and horrors of our last great Indian wars, including the Custer Massacre, defeat of Crazy Horse and death of Sitting Bull.

War-Path and Bivouac also covers the Campaign on the British Border in 1879 from the beginning of the ’79 Expedition, through Miles’ battle with Chief Joseph, and Sitting Bull’s last fight. An Addendum looks into the lives and careers of General Crook and General George A. Custer. Also included are official reports from others involved in these battles including General Sheridan’s Report, General Crook’s Account of the Rosebud fight as well as Colonel Poland’s version of the Little Big Horn disaster as conveyed to him by his trusted Indian contacts.
